Engines Off

Engines Off is a compact historical arcade game inspired by the Soviet women of the 588th Night Bomber Regiment, later the 46th Taman Guards Night Bomber Aviation Regiment, the famous Night Witches!

Fly an obsolete Po-2 biplane through twelve representative combat missions spanning 1942–1945. Strike infantry positions, convoys, railway yards, headquarters and supply depots while German searchlights, anti-aircraft guns and night fighters hunt you through the darkness.

The Po-2 is slow and vulnerable, but that weakness is also your greatest weapon. Keep the engine running for speed, then cut it on the approach and glide silently toward the target. Engine noise, gunfire, explosions and searchlights all affect enemy alert.

Weather changes from sortie to sortie. Moonlight may help you identify targets while making you easier to detect; cloud and darkness provide concealment at the cost of visibility; wind affects bombing; and poor conditions make the aircraft harder to handle.

Individual pilots can be killed, wounded or survive the loss of their aircraft. The regiment continues regardless. Fallen pilots are recorded on the Roll of Honour while replacement crews carry the campaign westward.
